This image was taken in my favorite Oaktree Forest northeast of Vienna. I looked for a place with a mystical feeling like this, containing gnarly oak trees, for a long time. Due to climatical conditions in Austria it seems like we almost dont have and forest with a lot of moss and fern like the ones you probably know from Madeira or the Southwest of the UK where there is much more humidity in the air. Those woodlands are also located on much higher altitudes.

But it seems like I’ve found a place at least where there are tons of beautiful oak trees and they are also a few years old and therefore often beautifully shaped. The conditions I like to shoot them most, are of course low light (blue hour) and foggy ones. Thats the time when the moss on their massive and gnarly branches starts to shine and add some more definition to their beautiful silhouettes.

This very image was taken after sunset and there is very little post processing involved as it was quite foggy already and the low light emphasised the contrast between the branches in the foreground and the foliage in the background. For me, this place is a true gem, as it’s quite big and has so many compositions to offer.
